Maggie is only 4 months old and a normal
puppy in most every way. She acts as if she hardly knows she is
injured. After being hit by a car, which broke her leg and injured
her spine, she found herself hobbling onto a hunting ranch in
Southern Arkansas. A group of hunters spotted her but assumed she
was part of the feral dog pack that frequents the ranch. The
hunters started to ride off on their ATVs and one small black dog
started running as fast as her broken leg could carry her after
them. "Please don't leave me again" she seemed to say, "Please
stop and help me!" Believe it or not, she was able to hobble after
them over a mile before they noticed her trying to get them to see
her and save her from certain painful death. Left alone in rural
Arkansas, she almost certainly would have been attacked and killed
by the feral pack if she had not been rescued.

One of the hunters brought her back home to Illinois and to our
shelter. Already told by a vet that her leg required pins and
surgeries totaling $2000 he knew he could not afford to take care
of her. Wondering if we could take her and make her whole again,
he dropped her off but couldn't get her off his mind. He called
and called and after our vet performed the surgery, he decided he
couldn't live without the spunky black pup and adopted her.

Maggie is one of the lucky ones. Her vet bills were measurable,
and with her injuries she will never be "right" again but has
found a home where "near-perfect" is good enough.
