Dottie

Hello there, my name is Dottie. I was found roaming the streets, extremely malnourished. Some lady spotted me and brought me here to the APA. The vet tech realized something was wrong when I kept drooling. After some tests they found I had CUPS disease. The staff here was good to me and I tried my best, but I had to go to Rainbow Bridge.

My surgeries cost over $600 and the APA was kind enough to pay for it. Can you help me pay them back so they can help other puppies in need?

Estates and Planned Giving

Including the GCAPA in your will or trust is a meaningful way to help support our “no kill” shelter. Many services and improvements to our shelter could be made possible by people who have the foresight to include the GCAPA in their estate plans.

Ways to give through wills and trusts:
Leave a specific dollar amount Designate that a percentage of your estate be given through your will or living trust.
Give only the remainder, or residue, of your estate—that which remains after bequests to loved ones have been made. Provide for a gift of specific property-real estate, stocks or other items.
An individual may designate that a bequest be used for the general purposes of the GCAPA, or go to support a specific program.

The following is a suggested form for such a bequest: “I give and bequeath to Granite City Association for the Protection of Animals, a not-for-profit corporation, located at 5000 Old Alton Road, Granite City, Illinois the sum of $___, to be used for the accomplishment of its general purposes (or for a specific purpose, as indicated).”

Maggie's Story - Saved by a Guardian Angel and the Granite City APA

Second chance for Lab puppy hit by a car and left for dead

Maggie is only 4 months old and a normal puppy in most every way. She acts as if she hardly knows she is injured. After being hit by a car, which broke her leg and injured her spine, she found herself hobbling onto a hunting ranch in Southern Arkansas. A group of hunters spotted her but assumed she was part of the feral dog pack that frequents the ranch. The hunters started to ride off on their ATVs and one small black dog started running as fast as her broken leg could carry her after them. "Please don't leave me again" she seemed to say, "Please stop and help me!" Believe it or not, she was able to hobble after them over a mile before they noticed her trying to get them to see her and save her from certain painful death. Left alone in rural Arkansas, she almost certainly would have been attacked and killed by the feral pack if she had not been rescued.

One of the hunters brought her back home to Illinois and to our shelter. Already told by a vet that her leg required pins and surgeries totaling $2000 he knew he could not afford to take care of her. Wondering if we could take her and make her whole again, he dropped her off but couldn't get her off his mind. He called and called and after our vet performed the surgery, he decided he couldn't live without the spunky black pup and adopted her.

Maggie is one of the lucky ones. Her vet bills were measurable, and with her injuries she will never be "right" again but has found a home where "near-perfect" is good enough.

If you would like to sponsor a dog like Maggie, please call us at 618-931-7030, or
